All Systems Green
Back in February, my instructor at the time encouraged us to get our portfolio site up and running as soon as possible. This was largely due to the imminent big networking event that my school was holding. So, I went ahead and started researching options for different sites to use but a week’s notice wasn’t nearly enough time. I ended up starting my Squarespace trial a couple weeks later, between that class and the next, and getting the preliminary layout set up. Then I sat on it for about three months.
Fast forward to my penultimate month at Full Sail. Another networking opportunity was approaching and I decided that was as good of a motivator as any to get back to work on my site. Naturally I waited until the night before to rush out a couple pictureless project pages and a rather empty home page. Luckily, I didn’t end up giving out my link to anyone at the event.
Fast forward another month to the week of graduation. Finally having the opportunity to take a break from our project, I went through and rewrote most of the project descriptions and finally added pictures. Then two weeks later, after some initial job applications, I finally took the time to sit down and start the blog portion of my site.
And here we are. Just you and me, having a nice one-on-one, somewhat one-sided conversation. I suppose the moral of the story is that the threat of having to network with people is the best motivator for working on your portfolio. Even now I would still describe my site as being in a beta phase. I am by no means a web designer, and that’s part of the reason I chose to use Squarespace over something free like Wix or Wordpress. I’m not trying to turn this into an ad but I would say that so far it’s been worth the price.
Anyway, that’s how I got to this point. I still have much more work to do, so I hope you’ll stick around and watch the place evolve. Plus now that all the preliminary blog stuff is out of the way, I can get to the real interesting stuff. Catch ya later!
